    Hi,

Apologies if this is not a theme issue, but in the last couple of days all the categories and tags have disappeared from my website that uses the receptar theme. When I look in the database in the wp_terms table I can see that they are all still there.

Is that an issue you have ever seen before? I have tried my host provider and they have no clue or suggestions other than restoring my site from a backup. I have tried that but it has not resolved the issue.

    Regards

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

I’ve never seen such issue before. And it is definitely not related to the theme.

I’m not actually sure what you mean by “all the categories and tags have disappeared”. Could you provide more info on what does it mean “disappeared”?

I tried to check a category archive on your website and I get 404 error page. Is this what you mean? If so, just try to flush your permalinks setup as that might help:

    1. Navigate to Settings → Permalinks
    2. Change the permalinks structure and save.
    3. Then change it back and save again.

This should flush WordPress permalinks and rebuilt them, so the category archive page should work again.

If it doesn’t, check your website .htaccess file. Maybe it was modified recent days and messed up the WordPress setup?

Also, you can try to check the plugins collision. Try using https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/ plugin’s troubleshooting mode. (I think maybe even your membership plugin has to do something with the issue as I am able to search your website perfectly fine, but I can not read individual posts. Maybe the membership plugin hides categories and tags too?)

    Hi Oliver,

Many thanks for your help, installing the health check plugin highlighted a plugin called WPCoreSys that was installed. I have removed that and all is working again.

It looks like my site may have been accessed and hacked so I have changed my admin password.

When I mentioned that the categories/tags had disappeared, they were not showing up in the Posts/Categories Section.

    Cheers

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

Thank you for the update. Indeed, searching internet reveals some nasty stuff about WPCoreSys. Hope you’ll be able to remove all traces of the malware from your website.

I suggest using security plugins such as https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/ or https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordfence/ or https://wordpress.org/plugins/sucuri-scanner/. Also, you can have your website checked online at https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/

I also suggest installing a backup plugin and enabling automatic backups of the database (set the frequency of database backups to daily, or depending on how do you use your website) and your files (this could be set to less frequent backups, such as weekly maybe). That will certainly help you restoring things back to pre-malware state easily.

Also, go through your plugins and remove the ones you don’t really need. You can check them in databases like https://wpvulndb.com/

And don’t forget to check your WordPress folders and files permissions too. https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

And use a strong password ;)

Hope these will help you to keep your website secure.

    Best regards,
